Mother of UGA footballer who died in crash says family has ‘no plans’ to take legal action

Less than 24 hours after a spokesperson for the law firm representing the family of a University of Georgia football player killed in a car accident said it would file a lawsuit, his mother tells FOX 5 that they have no plans to pursue legal action. to undertake.

An attorney for the family of 20-year-old UGA football forward Devin Willock shared a statement Thursday afternoon outside the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse. Roy Willey IV, a representative of the victim’s family, said Willock’s parents asked for “time and space” to properly process their grief. Sharlene Willock, Devin’s mother, was supposed to join Willey IV of the Go Big Injury Lawyers, but did not attend.

The lawyer said Willock’s parents could not appear at the press conference in Athens on Thursday. The Willock’s statement did not include details of a pending lawsuit over their son’s death.

“As there are no words to describe the sadness we experience with our loss, the support of everyone who has shared kind words and loving memories of Devin has helped us through this time,” the statement read. part. “What we want everyone to know is that Devin was more than just a football player. FOX 5 spoke to a representative on Wednesday, who was adamant about filing a lawsuit related to the crash.

Willock’s image and likeness were used for an advertising campaign. Willock’s billboards can still be found in and around Athens.

Willock was one of four people in an SUV that crashed just before 3 a.m. Sunday, just hours after a daylong celebration of back-to-back national championships by the Georgia Bulldogs.

According to the crash report released Tuesday, Willock was behind the driver’s seat of the black 2021 Ford Expedition as it exited the carriageway off Barnett Shoals Road, a short distance before Stroud Road.

According to the report, Willock was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from the SUV after the vehicle violently tore through two utility poles and crashed rear-end into a tree. He died on the spot.

The driver, 24-year-old UGA recruiter Chandler LeCroy, was trapped in the vehicle. She was to be rushed to the Piemonte Athens Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. She was buried in her hometown of Toccoa on Wednesday.

The report states that 21-year-old assailant Warren McClendon, who was in the front passenger seat, and 26-year-old recruiter Tory Bowles, who was in the right rear seat, were both injured. As of Wednesday evening, they were still recovering.

While the crash report was released Tuesday, investigators say toxicology reports are unlikely to come out for a few months.

The report cites excessive speeding as a contributing factor in the deadly crash.
