Jamahal Hill wins title; Glover Teixeira retires

RIO DE JANEIRO – The main event of UFC 283 resulted in one fighter reaching the pinnacle of the sport, while another rode off into the sunset.

Jamahal Hill (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) defeated Glover Teixeira (33-9 MMA, 16-7 UFC) to win the UFC light heavyweight title via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-44) . The vacant light heavyweight title fight was the main event of UFC 283 at the Jeunesse Arena.

Many pundits wondered how Hill would fare when faced with the struggling challenges of Teixeira. The tone was set early on as Hill stopped numerous takedown attempts from Teixeira. The first lap was largely contested from distance with the occasional (failed) attempt by Teixeira to drag him down.

In Round 2, the pace picked up as the defense mostly fell by the wayside. In a round that wouldn’t have been out of place had it been matched to his tense five rounds against Jiri Prochazka in June, Teixeira found himself in trouble for a Hill head kick.

Sensing Texeira’s instability, Hill struck with dozens of punches. Teixeira held off Hill, but took some damage in the process. Somehow Teixeira got Hill down and landed on the ground before the round ended.

On lap 3, Hill turned up the volume. He slammed Teixeira with a barrage of punches as the fight appeared to be close to a stoppage on multiple counts. Hill went back to the main stage again and found success, but Teixeira remained tough.

In the championship rounds, Teixeira was disfigured with nasty cuts over both eyes. He absorbed more and more strikes as the round went on – so many strikes in fact that there was discussion in the corner about throwing in the towel.

Finally, the corners and doctors decided to let the fight continue, to which Teixeira exclaimed, “Let’s go, baby.” F*cking A.”

Teixeira came out aggressively, straight at Hill. In the first minute he took down Hill and ended up in the mountain. Hill scrambled and finished on top – a crucial reversal. With a minute to go, Texeira escaped on his feet. As the clock ticked, Hill avoided unnecessary exchanges on the way to the final bell.

Moments after the title wrapped around an emotional Hill’s waist, Teixeira took off his gloves and placed them in the middle of the cage – announcing his retirement.

“I’m too strong for my own good,” Teixeira said. “I’m too heavy for my own health,” he explained why at this point in his life he would rather turn his attention to coaching.
